Ne-Yo @ Ministry of Sound, London 20/03/2006

R&B’s newest sensation and one of Def Jam Recordings newest signings, singer/songwriter Ne-Yo recently crossed the Atlantic to perform at South London’s Ministry of Sound…

Although this was Ne-Yo’s party, held in conjunction with Kiss 100, the man himself obviously wasn’t going to be there all night, and definitely not from the beginning. Keeping the crowd on their feet, DJ Scottie B dug deep in his record box, and kicked off some party serious vibes with some old skool house and garage classics, and even a little bit of bashment. It was like a Saturday night – people looked kriss, and by midnight the place was rammed - they were ready to rave.

Ne-Yo may be young, but he’s certainly achieved a lot, having written one of the biggest hits of last year, Mario’s number one hit, ‘Let Me Love You’. He’s also written for an array of superstars, including Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans and Musiq Soulchild.

Even though he’s a talented songwriter, Ne-Yo can also sing. With his recent No.1 hit ‘So Sick’ under his belt, his lyrics and baby boy looks certainly make the ladies scream, as shown at his recent bash on an unsuspecting Monday night.

Ne-Yo’s appearance at Ministry was eagerly anticipated and at 2am, two hours later than expected, Ne-Yo was finally ‘in the house’. So, when the music got locked off in the main room, and the MC announced Ne-Yo was going to be performing in the room next door, an excited crowd rushed, in an overly keen fashion, to the box room.

As with most male American R&B singers, their lyrics often make many young women want to scream, and this was the case with Def Jam’s latest star. As he came onstage the video phones went up, and after greeting the audience and a little ‘light entertainment’, he kicked it off! Joined by fellow Def Jam people, and with a little help from his backing singer, Ne-Yo gave a good show; he had the confidence and performed well with a natural and charismatic stage presence.

Ne-Yo gave the crowd a taster of material from his debut album, ‘In My Own Words’,  including the radio hits ‘Stay’ and ‘So Sick’, which got many singing and dancing along. He also was kind enough to toss his used towel into the audience, causing a stir amongst the ladies!

Ne-Yo then went on to demonstrate a few of his dance moves, delighting the crowd with his fancy footwork, bringing the night to a close with style.
