Van Hunt @ 93 Feet East, London - Monday 19 June, 2006
Hunt kept his audience waiting for well over an hour, but our wait was not in vain and the performance he delivered was nothing but amazing. Hunt tantalised his audience with his charismatic presence, sensuous vocals, (which are reminiscent of a young Prince) and incredibly sexy use of the electric guitar. Hunt’s musical arrangement of ‘Rock meets Blues’ and a splash of Funk took us back to a time of real music; music that sends shivers down your spine and was written with absolute passion. Hunt definitely falls into the categories of the greats such as Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone and Ray Charles. The audience were treated to hits from his 2004 self titled album, which was nominated for a Grammy and is best known for the track ‘Down Here in Hell’ which is neo-soul at its finest. Hunt also gave electrifying performances of tracks from his new album ‘On the Jungle Floor’, such as ‘Suspicion’, ‘Being a Girl and ‘Ride, Ride, Ride’. Hunt’s ability as a musician is sheer brilliance; not only does he go against conformity of being a black male vocalist and blends different types of sounds, he draws people into his musical world and captures his audience completely. He is, as he rightly claims, a ‘revolutionary artist’. It is no wonder why this singer/songwriter has caused a stir in the urban music scene writing and producing tracks for Joi, Raphael Saadiq and Dionne Farris. Hunt, (born and bred in Ohio), has acquired huge support from top artists in the game such as Alicia Keys who has said he is “one of the most incredible musicians I know’’, as well as the great Mary J. Blige, (whom he recently supported at her one-off London show), has hailed Hunt as someone she “really appreciates in music”. Hunt has also appeared alongside other huge names such as Kanye West, The Roots, Angie Stone, and Seal. Watching Hunt perform is a different kind of experience; he is a talent that is sure to be around for years to come. Hunt brings a breath of fresh air to the urban music scene, which is currently sounding very much the same and lacks originality.
