Jim Jones releases ‘On My Way to Church’ through Koch Records, a reflective story about his own life and experiences. There is a lot to question about the album in terms of the lyrical content and production, but it is a respectable debut from the Dipset member. The 21-track album is helped along with a list of guest appearances from T.I, Bizzie Bone, Cam’ron, Bezel, Juelz Santana and others, but there are only a few tracks where you will hear Jones rap alone. On the track ‘Twin Towers', Bizzie Bone along with Jim Jones delivers some great lyrics. You will hear Bizzie drop lines like: “Generation X, I am the mastermind, general militant seven side, revolution rebellious totally out of line, I am still in the mind of apocalyptic biblical optimistic thank my lucky stars…take me to the promised land.” As the album title suggests, it is Jim Jones offering his own personal testament on his view on life and the streets. On this album, Jim Jones talks street throughout, even paying respect to his friends who have died along the way. Not just a rapper, Jones of course brings through his talents as a producer and studio engineer, which you can hear on tracks like ‘Shotgun Fire’ and ‘Let’s Ride’. On a few tracks such as ‘This is Jim Jones’ and ‘Talking to the World’, you will here the familiar Dipset production style. Other producers on the album include Blackout Muzik, DJ S&S, Chad Hamilton and Boola. Some of the good tracks on the album include ‘Crunk Muzik’, ‘Lovely Daze’ and ‘This is Gangsta’. However, a few of the best parts of the album are the three ‘Capo Status’ tracks throughout. In them you can here his thoughts and experiences, which I would say is the realest part of the album. On ‘Capo Status Final Take’, he spits lyrics like: “It was hard my life, I even starved some nights…we feel oblivious too…beneath the projects lights…we strike hard at night, that’s why bees like living in this Harlem life.” ‘On My Way to Church’ is a decent effort for Jim Jones as debut release, and he continues to prove his worth as a street rapper.
