He made his first appearance on Dr. Dre’s debut ‘The Chronic’, and then in ’93 he released his first solo album ‘Doggystyle’. Thirteen albums later, along with many mixtapes, Calvin Broadus aka Snoop Doggy Dogg now hits the streets with a new and limited edition compilation album, ‘The One And Only’.

Over the years, Snoop has shown us his multi talents, from rapping, producing, acting and owning his own record label. He put the ‘G’ in G-funk music, the soul into rhymes and major dollar bills in his pocket!

‘Crippin’ 2 Tuff’ is the opening track, and introduces what’s to come from the rest of the album, expecting more hardcore beats and catchy rhymes. It then rolls onto the well-known track ‘Groupie Love’ by his group 213, (consisting of Snoop, Nate Dogg and Warren G), taken from their album ‘The Hard Way’, getting you into the mood for some classic Doggystyle vibes. But the tempo slows down to a remixed Usher track ‘Do It 2 Me’, taken from his ‘Confessions’ LP, which isn’t one of Usher’s strongest tunes and doesn’t do Snoop any justice by trying to funk it up.

A couple of tracks later, Snoop hollers ‘What U Hatin’ 4’, bringing us back into the Tha Godfather’s old skool style. Soul Allstars also takes us back into the classic soul sounds on ‘Come And Do Your Thing’, followed by the likes of The Isley Brothers, who are well known for one of their recent tracks ‘Busted’, which brought soulful vibes back into the charts, and the unforgettable Curtis Mayfield, who is a huge inspiration to many musicians, both appear later on the album. We all know Snoop is inspired by the classic sounds of soul, and laying down original samples proves that the soulful roots keep Hip Hop alive.

‘Summertime’, which features Snoop, could be worth checking out if the upbeat tempo stayed the same from the start. DJs could have fun scratching some remixes on this joint, making the beat worth bopping to. ‘Bottom Girl’ is one of the weakest tracks; although it has a catchy hook, Nate Dogg doesn’t seem to flow well on this one. Nate also features with Warren G and Snoop (213) rhyming on a fresh track, ‘Rollin’ Down The Highway’.

Although Snoop appears on the majority of the tracks, Goldie Loc from Tha Eastsidaz outshines him on ‘Makes You Wanna’, and label partner Soopafly on ‘Runnin’ Out Of Time’. These are the tracks you wanna be hearing on rotate on the radio airwaves and at clubs; it’s about time these acts stepped up and took centre stage. Another top track, ‘All The Girls’, is definitely a track you could move to, with its bouncy beat and catchy lyrics, it’s sure to put anyone on a high.

Snoop Dogg will cater rhymes and beats for everyone into all music genres; this album is worth checking out if you’re open minded to his different tastes and flavours.
