| Almost a year and a half after the release of his biggest album to date, fuelled by his collaboration with Kanye West on 2004’s ‘Slow Jamz’, Twista is back with the follow up, ‘The Day After’. Many people mistook Twista’s last album ‘Kamikaze’ as his debut, when in fact, the man from the ‘Windy City’ has been around for much longer. Even though this is not his sophomore release, can ‘The Day After’ top the multi-platinum success of ‘Kamikaze’, propelling Twista into the mainstream radio audience? The album’s lead single, ‘Girl Tonite’ featuring R&B newcomer Trey Songz, uses the ’80s sample of ‘Tonight’ performed by legends Ready for The World. Although not as big of a hit as ‘Slow Jamz’, it does the job well for showcasing Twista’s album release. On the subject of ‘Slow Jamz’, the Chi Town rapper crafts a potential hit with the Neptunes-assisted record ‘When I Get You Home’ featuring Pharrell and Jamie Foxx on the hook, one of the album’s finer records. “Pha-real” (as referred to by Jay-Z) lays magic for the mellow sounds on ‘Lavish’, and also displays an impressive flow. With the album’s better records being either love-orientated or chilled out, Twista fails miserably at attempting to be the tough guy on ‘Heartbeat’, the ‘don’t mess with me’ record. Although he succeeded on ‘Kamikaze’ with this type of record (in the form of ‘One Last Time’), Twista falls way short on ‘The Day After’. With the notable absence of fellow Chicago native Kanye West either behind the mic or behind the boards, Scott Storch steps in and lends a beat for the catchy ‘Get It How You Live’. Snoop Dogg also lends a hand with his “pimp” persona on ‘Had To Call You’, whilst Juvenile and Twista’s homies, the Speedknot Mobstaz, join the ‘Windy City’ rapper on ‘Out Here’. On ‘Hit The Floor’, Miami’s very own Pitbull accompanies Twista for an ultimate club hit extravaganza, whilst once again Twista is accompanied by Mariah Carey on ‘Lonely’, creating the lovers’ record, a track well suited for the charts. ‘The Day After’ is a strong release from Twista, but could have been better considering the number of guest appearances there were. In comparing this to ‘Kamikaze’, it is fair to say that ‘The Day After’ is struck by a repetitive nature in content - sex! The album is also not a huge step forward for Twista in regards to development, both lyrically and content wise, with ‘The Day After’ not really possessing any of the previous conscious subject matters, as addressed on ‘Hope’, his collabo with Faith Evans. There is no doubt that the Chi Town native has released a good record, it’s just that ‘The Day After’ lacks the content balance in the album, something which propelled ‘Kamikaze’ to do mega numbers.
