The Young Gunz landed on the Hip Hop scene with their smash hit single, ‘Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop’ in 2003, dominating the charts and the clubs for weeks. Their new album, ‘Brothers From Another’ is their second to date, and discusses everyday life from the bad times to the good. From their struggles to their success, it is a biography of their lives.

Young Chris and Neef of the Young Gunz fire their latest release with the sounds of urban Hip Hop and southern rap. The tracks consist of lyrics describing the difficulties of living in the ghetto. Fresh and straight from Philadelphia, this Roc-A-Fella duo is lyrically stimulating, narrating where they are from, who they are and how far they have come.

Their new single, ‘Don’t Keep Me Waiting’, features Slim from 112, blending the sounds of smooth rap and R&B beats to create this mellow romantic musical feel with Slim’s great vocals, and sampling the late, great, Luther Vandross. This is not like any other Hip Hop album; it is instrumentally diverse with jazzy and old school sounds, demonstrating the album’s hybridised beats. ‘Same Sh*t Different Day’ talks about how their lives have changed from having financially nothing to being comfortable. The ‘Youngest In Charge’ rap about their coming of age and their love for women on the track ‘Grown Man’, whilst Chris and Neef describe their ideal woman to be sophisticated, able to cook and to look good. ‘Beef’ is a hardcore rap about guns and gangs and the ‘beef’ between gangs in the ghetto. Whispers of ‘ooh’, ‘yeah’ are echoed in the background as if to capture the moment of danger. ‘What We Gotta Do’ is about trying to straighten their lives up, shootings and deaths in the ghetto, which are stopping them from achieving it. ‘We Still Here’ is a hardcore rap about being brave, alive and being able to face ghetto life. Echos of ‘we still here’ are continuously muttered in the background as a form of conscience and authority.

The album is reaching out to everyone that has had trouble in their lives, initially, working class people that are struggling to have a decent life because of the consequences of street crime and poverty. ‘It’s the Life’ is a favourite Hip Hop beat in terms of lyrics, sound and production, with a DMX/gangsta feel to it.

If you are feeling some old school Hip Hop with a mix of diverse beats, then this album is for you. Not only does it feature Slim from 112 but the lyrics alone are powerful enough with a great narrative about life’s struggles, being brave and living in the hood. Buy the album and experience Philadelphia life through Young Gunz’ eyes.
