In 1977, Bob Marley made music history with the release of ‘Exodus’, a record which went on to become a true classic of its time. Thirty years on, and that same album is once again of groundbreaking status – this time, by embracing technology and becoming the first artist-specific album to be released on the USB memory stick and Micro SD card formats. Of course, complete in the Rastafarian colours of red, yellow and green. For many, ‘Exodus’ is highly regarded as one of the best albums of the 20th century – and that title still remains today. Having mellowed with age (and no doubt, the attempted assassination on his life in 1977), Marley produces some of his biggest and best loved hits on this CD. From the brilliant ‘Three Little Birds’ to the peace anthem ‘One Love/People Get Ready’ to the sensational ‘Jamming’, Marley gives us nothing but the best. Even the rasta-grooves of ‘Waiting In Vain’ and ‘Turn Your Lights Down Low’ are still receiving regular airplay, with the laid back vibe of the tracks getting a dust-off every once in a while. The melodic tunes of ‘So Much Things To Say’ and ‘Exodus’ matched with the thought-provoking lyrics not only gives fans beats to jam to, but also makes them aware of the state of world affairs with his political and religious undertones. While Marley was undoubtedly a genius in his own right with his soulful, heartfelt vocals, the contribution of his backing band The Wailers is often overlooked. However, without the intricate structuring of the instruments (the percussion, bass guitar and drums) by members Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett, Carlton Barrett, Alvin ‘Seeco’ Patterson, Julian ‘Junior’ Marvin and Tyrone Downie, who’s to say ‘Exodus’ the album would have become the classic it is today? One thing however, is for certain: the late Jamaican reggae star is one of the most prolific singer/songwriters that ever lived, and it is a measure of his influence and artistic creativity that he is still inspiring young musicians over 20 years after his untimely death. So, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the release of ‘Exodus’, just sit back, relax and enjoy the sounds of Bob Marley & The Wailers – I guarantee you won’t be disappointed by the legend that is Bob Marley, R.I.P.
