| The
idea of taking a couple of hot artists and putting them together to form
a supergroup isn't new to urban music. Just look at Lucy
Pearl, LSG and The
Firm. Thing is, none of these groups seem to get past the first
album. Can Jigga and Kellz
break this vicious cycle of failure? Well, if recent events are anything
to go by, then no. The revelation of R. Kelly's
new underage sex scandal has shown just how fickle this collab was, with
Def Jam refusing to promote the album with R.Kelly and Jay-Z
even asking for his face to be removed from theVibe cover he was supposed
to be sharing with Mr Kelly. Musically, The Best of Both World's starts off promising enough with an anthemic song of the same name, but the album quickly decends into a quagmire of Trackmaster produced hip-pop party joints. Songs like the lead single, Honey, and the club-friendly Break Up to Make Up are being rinsed at raves and radio stations across the country, but after 50 minutes even the most hardcore RnB head will get a bit tired of the same ol' money, clothes and ho's scenario. R. Kelly and Jigga are merciful enough to offer us an all-too-brief repreive on It Ain't Personal, on which Jay-Z weaves us a spellbinding tale of treacherous friends, and The Streets a vivid and moving tale about Jay-Z's introduction to the street life. This is defintely the best song on the album. Considering the average age of R.Kelly's fan's are about 15 some of the lyrics are raw bordering on obscene. The full extent of R. Kelly's apparent lunacy is revealed when on 'P***y' he describes himself as the 'Lesbian RnB Thug' (?!) and then he has the cheek to take a swipe at Sisqo! At times it feels like a Jay-Z album that just happens to have R.Kelly singing on every song. It will probably sell a fair bit but true fans of either artists will be disappointed by the lack of originality and brillance they both display Personal
