The rise of the vampire movie is almost legendry and the excitement of the flick is always enhanced by the chosen score. Expectations were high for the forthcoming soundtrack to Wesley Snipes' hot new movie - "Blade II". The collaborations read like a who's who in Rap and Rock. With alliances such as Fatboy Slim and Eve, Gorillaz & Redman, Dub Pistols & Busta Rhymes, Moby & Mystikal it sets itself to be a bombardment of attention-grabbing tracks. The Track "Tao of the Machine" by BT and The Roots is somewhat respectable and Mos Def and Massive Attack's remake of Bad Brains "I Against I" is proof that there is room for these types of collaborations. The duel with Redman and the Gorillaz on the track "Gorillaz On My Mind" is passable as an energetic remix. Regrettably the Blade II soundtrack sounds extremely mind-numbing and unnatural. What should have been the dawn of a new style, instead works as testimony that some waters are best left uncharted. The whole album is not a complete failure just a few collaborations which fall short. The Paul Oakenfold and Ice Cube calamity, "Right Here Right Now" is a barrage of noise which is painful to the ears. The Moby and Mystikal joint is another agonizing track which does feel as though your blood is being drawn out. This musical excursion is designed to create new openings and merge different genres, but it is doubtful it will grab the interest of all. The music may work great as a soundtrack to a gratuitous vampire picture, but with the heavyweights on this album you would expect something a bit more appealing. As cool as it is to unite artists from contrasting genres, this is a big risk to take, especially when these fusions can look more fabulous on paper than they actually sound. This is a dangerous outing on the part of the makers of this soundtrack and they deserve a lot of credit for producing an album that is far from run of the mill. Though this review may sound critical, this album would have been best to stick to one genre either Rap or Rock. The outcome is a soundtrack that only sits well as background music for a bloodsucking vampire movie.
