Over in the ‘hoods’ of the United States, the mixtape circuit is a place where underground music is at its hottest, and is where new artists breakthrough. Well, the king of Mixtape DJ’s is DJ Kay Slay a.k.a ‘The Drama King’. Slay is back after his adequate effort on ‘Streetsweepers 1’. The charismatic DJ calls upon the likes of 50 cent, Memphis Bleek, Eminem, Obie Trice, Cam’ron, Ghostface, Scarface and LL Cool J just to name a few. That’s the reason the cd caught my attention in the first place!

Slay is influential in showing his true mixtape qualities and cutting down on the commercial style which attracts the larger audience. Hot tracks such as ‘Face Off’ featuring Ghostface and Scarface display the real gritty hip hop of two lyrically impressive artists. Slay also maintains this on the Kanye West produced ‘No Problems’ featuring Jaheim, Nore, Nature and Left Gunz. All aspects of the track are amazing including Nore’s delivery, and Jaheim’s vocals which blaze the track up. Slay also doesn’t forget to include rap’s hottest talent at the moment on his roster- The Shady/Aftermath camp. G Unit display their street style on ‘Angels around Me’ showing why each member of G Unit (50 cent, Lloyd Banks and Young Buck) are rap’s most talked about today. Slay opens the gate for an appearance by Eminem and Obie Trice on ‘Im Gone’. Speaking of hot rhymes, new G Unit member, Game steals the show on ‘Hands on the Pump’ featuring Memphis Bleek and Sauce Money. With opening rhymes such as “Dip through NY/ Black Impala/ Matching interior, Cali Plates/ Im that serious”. His quality on the track excites me for his release on Aftermath Records this year.

L Cool J shows a rare lyrical ability shown in his earlier days on Swizz Beats (DMX ‘Get it on the Floor’) produced ‘The Truth’. LL calmly spits “Some cats neglected the fact that L was hot/cuz their woman elected me hot when I stepped in the spot. Other tracks such as Three 6 Mafia’s ‘Who Gives a… Where you from’ and Twista’s ‘Get Retarded’ also create buzz to maintain so far an excellent effort by Slay. But just at the album is heated up, let down tracks for me included a radio friendly, sing a long type record ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ featuring E-40 and Lil Mo. The hook here is very corny, and same applies to a poor effort on ‘Celebrity Love’ featuring Lala, Sunny and Chinky Brown Eyes.

The Drama King has made an impressive, solid effort in slating a fully release and marketed album, among the numerous mixtapes he release which blaze up the mixtape circuit. Usually I am very hesitant over purchasing mixtape DJ’s releasing albums which are fully released to a main hip hop audience, but this exciting release proved me wrong, with a guest of high profiled artists and even underground artists such as Papoose on ‘Alphabet Slaughter’. Kay Slay successfully showcases his A&R abilities by representing every level of the industry on this album, and in effect, he produces a comfortable, solid listen.

3.5 Out of 5

10. No Problems- Jaheim featuring Nore, Nature and left Gunz
