Fat Joe - Jealous Ones Still Envy

Release date:Dec 14, 2001

It hasn't been an easy past two years for Fat Joe. First his friend and protégé Big Pun died from a heart attack, later that same week Joe's Grandfather passed. He has also had to support his mother's fight against cancer and his brothers drug addiction. All the while his sister still remains in the coma she slipped into during childbirth. On the musical side his Terror Squad, which he ran with Big Pun, collapsed. And he was put under mass pressure from his record company to deliver a hot sophomore album. I think its fair to say he's achieved this.

Up until J.O.S.E. (standing for Jealous Ones Still Envy) Joe has had the underground's attention for years, with hard core hip hop heads bowing to his lyrical abilities. Though up until know he has never quite managed to reach the
dizzy heights of rap superstardom. Unlike the two double platinum Big Pun albums he over saw Joe has only ever gone gold. But with J.O.S.E he is reaching a bigger market.

Released last year with a little promotional push the success of J.O.S.E. has been mainly due to word of mouth and the strength of its first two singles.
Currently getting airplay the world over is the second single 'What Love' featuring R'n'B's new Princess Ashanti.

Going in for that Ja Rule style hip hop of love raps with R'n'B crooners on the hook 'What's Love' and the last single 'We Thuggin' with the scandalous R Kelly
are definite standouts on the album and club scene of the moment.

Though if your going to buy this album expecting soft rap you may be disappointed. It is no departure from the rawness that made Fat Joe. Tracks like 'He's not real' and Fight Club' with Petey Pablo and, the nosiest boys in rap, M.O.P. showcase Joe's less loveable side. Not to say that their too hardcore for a mainstream audience. 'Get the Hell on with that' with Ludacris has got club hit written all over it. As do some of the tracks with Remy Martin. A name you might not know but will have definitely heard on past Big Pun tracks and M.O.P.s 'Ante Up' remix.

As much as he declares to be 'The true king of NY' Fat Joe lacks in the charisma and humour that made Big Pun such a mainstream success. Though if he keeps putting out albums like J.O.S.E. where he can successfully have a R'n'B track next to one like 'Its OK' where he flips a story reminiscent of BIGs 'Niggas Bleed' he's defiantly on the right road to success. And he deserves credit for doing it despite all his personal woes and without a Neptune beat.
