We all remember the track ‘Dude’ which caused a stir on the mainstream music scene, with nearly everyone talking about its sexual lyrics. Ms. Thing, the vocalist who appeared alongside Beenie Man on ‘Dude’, has now released her debut album ‘Miss Jamaica’. Signed to Beenie’s label, Shocking Vibes Productions, Ms. Thing looks forward to joining the ladies of Dancehall.

This 13 track album covers nearly everything, the money, sex and fame. Guest appearances include Beenie Man on the track ‘Ms.Thing & The Doctor’, as well as Vybz Kartel on the track ‘It Haffi Good’.

Production on the album is diverse. Dave Kelly, the person who discovered Miss Thing, produces as well as writes on her set, for example the hot track ‘Get That Money’. However, one of the best producers on the album is Donovan Bennett also know as Vendetta, who lays out good vibes on the aforementioned track ‘It Haffi Good’ and ‘Rich and Famous’.

The track ‘Love Guide’, produced by Switch, is completely different to the rest of the tracks on the album, with the track starting off with a Drum and Bass beat. The rest of the ‘Love Guide’ track then progresses with music from congo drums, claps and everyday sounds like the ringing of a mobile phone entwined into the song.

One downfall about Miss Thing is that none of the lyrics were actually written by her. Instead, all of the lyrics were either written by the producers themselves or by other professional songwriters. On content, a couple of the tracks from the album make Ms. Thing look like a sex-crazed 17-year-old, for example on ‘Love Guide’ featuring Switch. Yet, this young woman gets even more explicit on ‘Muscle Tight’, where she drops lyrics like: ‘Keep muscle tight, learn to mek ya man feel right/ touch ya toe, mek him say what him like/ now use your mouth like…’

Vocally, she still needs a lot of development; she has that amateurish feel on tracks ‘Regular’ and ‘I Want It All’ which samples the track ‘Dude’. However, her voice does strengthen on tracks like ‘Rich and Famous’, ‘Get That Money’ and ‘Modeling’ which features the singer Alanna Leslie.

Considering she is just 17-years-old, a baby in this industry, she is in the right place to further develop her style and possibly write her own music material. As she gets older hopefully her vocal ability will progress far greater, and perhaps in the future we will see Ms. Thing as strong as the likes of Lady Saw.
