| There's
something almost nostalgic about Tweet.
Let's face it. She's in her late twenties, and probably jammed to the best
of old school RnB. Her debut album hints towards that infamous decade, and
wouldn't be out of place amongst the Houstons,
Franklins, and other soul singers that
made those years classic. Still, considering she's riding in Missy's
camp, her vintage flavour is given a modern twist by Timbaland's
trademark beats, and straight-up candid lyrics that'd even make Prince blush. Southern Hummingbird is a mellow experience, and sees Tweet reiterate a love story that's cliché in the world of RnB. She starts by describing a new love on the mesmerising My Place, falls out with the bastard on the soulfully stylish Smoking Cigarettes, and ends up in a drunken stupor by the end of the LP on the awkward Drunk. On the other hand, songs such as Make Ur Move and Boogie 2nite sees Tweet get her act together and start the party right, 80s style. "Follow me/Stand if you want to, stare if you want to/But I gotta party, I'm up in the Party" croons Tweet along to a funky beat and a catchy melody. At best, Tweet delivers the slow jams like a pro, and there are enough descent tracks worthy of a bump and grind. But opening the album with five of them was a bad move. While RnB fans probably anticipated the album to start with a song that would challenge the heavily rotated Oops (Oh My), the first twenty minutes is a monotonous set that would only get a regular spin by those getting 'busy', or those too busy to hold out for the faster tracks. Yawns aside, the production values are mint, and the timberland/missy team gives the singer's dainty vocals the unique sound it deserves. Tweet's a songbird with a lot of class, and while a number of the songs could be a bit livelier, her debut is a real treat that delivers a soulful array of quality goods.
