| They’ve only been in the spotlight two years and have already released four albums and caused ‘Pandemonium’ amongst teenage girls everywhere. B2K, The Boys of The Millennium, return with their fifth album and new movie, featuring Steve Harvey and Lil Kim. You Got Served: The Soundtrack, recently released in the United States, may serve as B2K’s last album together as it has been stated that Omarion, the starring role in the film, has separated from other group members, Lil Fizz, J-Boog and Raz B. If this split is permanent, it will be regrettable as B2K have definitely shown that they know how to sell records. This album is a mixture of mellow tracks and party tunes, a formula that B2K are well known for and one that has given them much success over the years. The first three tracks are upbeat party-starters. One of these tracks is ‘Do That Thing’ by B2K featuring Lil Kim, which has a beat to make you bounce. Surprisingly, Lil Kim keeps it 100% clean on her flow, which is very tame for the Queen Bee. In fact the album pretty much follows this theme; very tame and radio friendly. The first track ‘Badaboom’, although not the best, is produced by the already accomplished Marques Houston. What exactly is Badaboom, I hear you ask, well with lyrics like, "Mami I’m just trynna get you in my room and see that big badabing go badaboom", I’m sure you can guess. Listening to this track, it would seem that MH has learnt a lot from working with R Kelly as ‘Badaboom’ has the Pied Piper feel. Marques Houston also has his own track on the album called Smile and proves to be one of the most memorable tracks on the album, it displays MH’s talent in production and smooth vocals. In some parts you could be mistaken for hearing Michael Jackson when Marques reaches some super high notes. Jhené, a new artist has taken the number 8 spot with her song ‘Happy’ featuring B2K. ‘Happy’ is laid-back and sets a calm tone for the rest of the album. The collaboration of Jhené’s soft female vocals with B2K blend together to make a soothing sound and once again reinforces the easy listening nature of the soundtrack. Further variety is displayed on the album by XSO Drive with their song ‘Can I Get It Back’. These R&B singers sing over sampled Hip Hop beats. M.O.P close the album on an aggressive vibe with the 2000 smash ‘Ante Up’, originally featuring Busta Rhymes. As yet I am still baffled as to why this track has made it onto the album because it does not seem to fit with the feel of the all the other tracks that preceded. I’m sure all will be explained upon seeing the movie. To conclude, B2K have created an album which has the potential to be successful, the tracks are radio friendly, easy listening and will appeal to their already huge fan base. The first release of this album, ‘Badaboom’ is already receiving heavy rotation and will only further drive the popularity of the album.
